The Samaritans
"Samaritans" is
the Societal Welfare Club of MDI. Its members
work with an evangelistic zeal towards making a
positive difference to the lives of lesser privileged
people around them. Indeed the motto of the club
says it all: ‘Empowering people, Changing lives’.
"
Samaritans
empowers and enables through a host of activities
that span fostering greater awareness to concrete
on the ground action. Further all, activities of
Samaritans are voluntary. A completely student driven
initiative, the amount of persistence and passion
shown towards social causes by its members is no
less than exemplary. Here is a brief overview of
what kind of activities the club engages in:
The Literacy Drive:
This is the flagship activity of Samaritans. Volunteers
take out an hour’s time from their hectic schedules
to teach hostel & mess workers every night. The
progress has been delightful. Some of the ‘students’
can work on MS-Word, MS-Excel and even operate their
e-mail accounts and surf the internet.
Tikri Village Empowerment Project:
a village called Tikri nearby MDI. Volunteers
take out time every week to teach village children
through games, computers etcetera. They employ the
method of experiential learning to make studying
fun for children. Further, they organize elaborate
competitions for the village children in association
with an NGO called Sanskari. Their efforts have
already begun to bear fruit so that the children
look forward for their next ‘class’ called ‘Masti
ki Pathshaala’.
Bihar Flood Relief:
Samaritans worked with the ‘Art of Living Foundation’
towards helping the flood victims in Bihar. The
team collected substantial relief material from
the MDI community and routed them to Bihar through
the ‘Art of Living Foundation’.
Blood Donation Camps:
Samaritans, in association with the National
Thalassemia Welfare Society organizes periodic
blood donation camps where the entire campus comes
forward to enthusiastically ‘donate blood to save
lives’.
The Samaritans Week:
Samaritans observes the ‘Samaritans Week’ every
year, where the key emphasis is to promote awareness
about saving electricity and water through posters,
e-mails, videos, etcetera.
Tree Plantation Week:
The club also organizes a tree plantation week.
Saplings are planted in the campus and arrangements
are made to ensure that they are taken due care
of so that they go on to become flourishing trees.
Thus, Samaritans creates a direct impact on the
environment and ensures a better campus to live
in.
Illumina Stalls:
Old Clothes Donation:
The club also encourages people on the campus to
donate old clothes that are then sent to various
charity missions like the ‘Missionaries of Charity’.
These charities make use of these clothes for relief
work, and for providing clothing to underprivileged
sections.
Illumina Stalls:
The club plans to host stalls at Illumina,
the annual Diwali mela organized by MDI. The stall
shall sell products made by orphans and destitute
and return the revenues generated back to them.
Skits at Imperium:
Samaritans is planning to host skits to promote
causes like health awareness at Imperium,
the annual Inter B-School festival hosted by MDI.
With the passion and perseverance that the club
has been showing in all of these efforts, the
volunteers deserve to be called ‘The Good Samaritans’!
W5H
W5H
fills in the long felt absence of a Quiz Club
@ MDI. What does W5H stand for? The Five W's and
the Solitary H of quizzing - Who, Where, When,
What, Why, How which are epitomized in its logo.
A motley group without question, W5H has members
of all shapes & sizes and no forms W5H has
formed a reputation of being one of the most vibrant
and active societies at MDI in its formative year
with its members doing the institute proud by
winning quiz contests all over the country. Notable
mentions include quizzes at IIT Delhi.
Web
Committee
The Web Committee was constituted
to ensure a rich and satisfying IT experience
for all the stakeholders of MDI especially the
past, present and future ManDevIans. Today, Web
Committee is the technology club of MDI which
also brings technology to every aspect of a student’s
life at MDI – be it academic, extra-curricular
or fun aspect. Web Committee is in charge of the
development & maintenance of student’s portal
mandevian.com. It engages with the coordinators
of all the activities and events on campus to
ensure that the site is updated with the latest
content. Web Committee also ensures that the official
MDI Website is updated periodically. Besides this
it also strives to support all the other official
websites related to MDI i.e. Alumni Portal and
Placement Portal and make the latest content available
to them. Web Committee also works on creating
& managing online forums for next batch of students
to ensure they are well updated about MDI before
coming to MDI. This year a major initiative which
Web Committee has undertaken is to integrate websites/blogs
of various clubs under one domain - mandevian.com
making it one stop solution to all club related
information. Another achievement of Web Committee
this year is creation of ‘VidyaSagar’ – an academic
system to manage & archive all study-related material
for students. Besides these, Web Committee also
conducted an online quiz – ‘Quizz IT’ which had
questions highlighting importance of technology
in various domains of management. For remaining
year, Web committee is looking forward to conducting
sessions by experts on how technology can be leveraged
to improve efficiency in various aspects of management.
Case study competitions & technical article writing
competitions are also planned. To ensure fun aspect
also remains in life of mandevians, Web Committee
is planning to organize regular movie screening,
an offline & one online gaming week & online treasure
hunt.
