Annual Events

Delphique

Delphique is MDI’s Annual National Management Convention. In its 20th year now, Delphique is India’s only B-school event which focuses on strong research in various domains of management. Derived from the famous ‘Delphi’ method, the event provides the perfect platform for practitioners & thought leaders from the industry, academia and the student populace to come together to discuss contemporary issues faced by the industry. Famously known as the Red Carpet event of MDI, Delphique is a confluence of three events: Research Panel Discussions – Faculty mentored research assessed by a high profile panel discussion; Vincenza – International Business Plan competition; Cerebro – National Case Study Challenge.

Delphique plays host to leading companies and numerous high profile corporate leaders every year. Over the years Delphique has had a healthy association with leading dailies and newspapers such as The Economic Times, The Financial Express, Business Standard and online media partners such as Dare2Compete.

Delphique 2015-16 played host to 22 companies and 50+ corporates over three days of the event, Nov 20th to Nov 22nd, in association with title partner Reliance Industries Ltd. and associate partner Oriental Bank of Commerce. Delphique got extensive corporate participation from knowledge partners such as Western Union, Air France KLM, Reckitt Benckiser, Uber, Michael Page, IBM, Reliance, ShopClues.

Day 1 of the convention was inaugurated by Mr. Shri R K Bahuguna, CMD Railtel India. The scheduled Finance and Marketing domain research panels witnessed the presence of keynote speakers like

Day 2 saw interesting discussions on topics like “HR practices that drive innovation and employee engagement in R&D organizations”, and “Evolving Business Ecosystem in India”with speakers like

Day 3 provided a platform for students to hone their entrepreneurial skills by interacting with successful leaders like

Mr. Gaurav Malhotra, CEO - India, Bourne-Hall International, and

Apart from the entrepreneurship panel discussion, the research panels also witnessed the presence of speakers like Mr. Anurag Batra, Chairman, Business World, Shri Rajiv Yadav, IAS, Secretary (Sports), Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Amit Ghugre, Head of Trade Marketing, Reckitt Benckiser India,and Mr.  Ankur Sharma, Head of E-commerce and Digital Marketing, Reckitt Benckiser.

With 8 research panels on board, Delphique provided a wonderful opportunity to students to interact with the corporates. The research panel discussions provided a platform for students to present their ideas and research findings across to the corporates and thereby learn from their experiences. The case study competition Cerebro, partnered with ShopClues, saw participation from over 400 teams. The B-plan competition Vincenza, in association with 91 SpringBoard and SternFisher, was an exhibition of over 100 innovative ideas and business plans.

The convention also witnessed support from giants like Oracle, The Royal Bank of Scotland. Online media partners MBAUniverse, EconomyDecoded, Digital Vidya and campfestiva helped in the promotions for a successful event. Other media partners such as Impact, InsideIIM, MBAclubindia, MBASkool also covered the event.

Illumina

Deciphering the method of disguised market research, MDI students organize Illumina 2016

Understanding the need, wants and beliefs of a consumer is prime requisite for any business. In today’s competitive era, it is important for budding managers to get a deeper and clearer understanding of consumer mindset and behavior.

Enhancing the festive spirit of Diwali, Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurugram, one of the leading B-schools in the country, organized the 20th annual Diwali Mela, ‘Urban Illumina’ which presents to corporates a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into consumer psyche through innovative models designed by the students of MDI. Illumina is a disguised market research club of MDI which conducts four events annually. Out of these, ‘Urban Illumina’ is the most popular and celebrated event, which is held on the weekend preceding Diwali. This year MDI celebrated the 20th edition of the annual festival, with the central theme of “understanding the psyche of the Indian consumer”. Illumina is organised in three formats: Urban Illumina, Rural Illumina and Expressions.

Under Rural Illumina, the students target consumers from rural segment. Under the guise of Pataudi’s famous Dussehra Mela, MDI students conducted a disguised market research. Previous partners included Airtel, Tata Solar Power, SBI amongst others. This year Illumina conducted market research projects for Amplus Solar and Lava. Around 30 students from MDI played a part in the event and gauged the behavior of rural population for the brands.

Urban Illumina was celebrated as a “Diwali Mela” at the MDI Greens amidst shining lights, delectable cuisine and enthralling performances by folk artistes. Research was disguised as students set up Nukkad Nataks and plays themed around the market research topic. Students solicited a response from the target group subtly, without them knowing that they are under observation.

Sponsored by MDI and Corporation Bank in association with LAVA mobiles and Punjab National Bank, this year’s Illumina saw more than 4,000 people converging on the MDI campus to enjoy the festivities planned.

This year’s highlight was the performance of popular band Faridkot, whose members describe its music as ‘Confused Pop’.

Commenting on the event, Prof. A K Jain, Chairperson Student Affairs, said, “We have been organizing this event for the past 19 years, and ‘Urban Illumina’ has grown over the years in terms of footfalls and activities. It is one of the most anticipated events on the campus every year for the students of MDI and we hope the future batches will host the event with the same enthusiasm and fervor as their predecessors to preserve its stature as one of the most-sought after events in the annual calendar of MDI.”

Illumina unveiled the psyche of the Indian consumers by exposing them to various engaging and engrossing games designed by the students of MDI. The event has, over the years, carved a niche for itself in the corporate world as an innovative market research fair peppered with the best cultural performances by talented artists selected from all over the country.

Imperium Akshayam

Get set for 72-hour of non-stop activity at MDI Gurugram’s annual inter-college cultural, sports and management fest, Imperium and Akshayam 2016

Amidst a hectic schedule with never-ending lectures and projects, B-School students often find it difficult to take time out to follow their hobbies or network with other students. However, the variety of student-run clubs and organisations at Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurugram, one of the leading B-schools in the country, ensure that students develop themselves holistically with adequate exposure to diverse skill sets. In the same vein, MDI has begun its annual inter-college cultural, sports and management fest, Imperium & Akshayam, held from the 4-6th of November, to aid management students in forming the right networks, test their managerial skills and put their classroom knowledge into practice, all with tonnes of fun and entertainment sprinkled.

This year, MDI celebrates its 16th edition of Imperium & Akshayam, with the central theme of “Leading the Change”. Expecting the students to emerge not only as successful professionals but as people contributing to the society, the presiding guests shared their words of wisdom for the students. Stressing on the different pillars on which success is based and measured upon, Prof. C.P Shrimali, Acting Director, MDI Gurugram, said, “To be successful or unsuccessful takes the same amount of time. The difference is manifested in time management. The first ingredient is to understand, 'what I want to do’; second is confidence; third is restlessness and the fourth component is converting goals to action in the given time frame."

This year, the festival will feature numerous innovative events and competitions which will ensure the participants remain engrossed in, challenged by and excited with the line-up. The two major highlights of the fest are ‘PhalanX’ and ‘Beyond Karma’. ‘Beyond Karma’, conceptualized by Samaritans, the social welfare wing of MDI in collaboration with GeneBandhu, challenges the participants to live up to the social demands of the modern age by tying them with a social cause by making them aware of problems of blood disorder.

Mr. Deepak Bahri, Managing Director of Sentiss Pharma and the Chief Guest at the occasion addressed the inaugural session, followed by the lamp-lighting ceremony. He said, "Bringing in a change is not so easy. The trait of successful managers is to initiate change with small things, even if it is as small as waking up early in the morning."

‘Phalanx’, is a one-of-a-kind unique strategy game which creates a challenging simulated environment that tests the speed, mental agility, and survival skills of participants. The unpredictably-formatted game can be played only by individuals with the winner to be awarded a whopping Rs. 70000 award money! The other case study competitions from various clubs such as ‘Adhigrahan’ - Finance Case Competition, ‘Biz-Czar’ – Strategy Case Competition, ‘Colossus’ – The IT Case Competition, ‘Eleusis’ – The HR Case Challenge, ‘Opniscient’ – the Operations Case Challenge, ‘Sans Pareil’ – The Marketing Case Challenge will be held to test the students’ domain knowledge to the very depths. MarQ events, one of the most popular segment of events at MDI, will include MarQ’s n A’s, MarQEye, MarQ Safari and Brandcharade. Popular campus competitions such as ‘Cricketainment’, a simulation game based on IPL player auctions and ‘Nautica’, one of the oldest online management games testing knowledge, decision making and strategic planning have also been incorporated in the three-day long event.

Some of the sports events to be held this year are Cricket, Football, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis along with other indoor games. Besides these events, numerous on the spot activities will be held to keep every spectator engaged for three days of infinite entertainment. All the events will be judged by illustrious personalities from different fields. Apart from mind-boggling case studies and interesting sports events, some of the cultural events to be held this year are ‘Beat the Beat’, a group dance event, War of Bands, and a Fashion show.

This year at Imperium & Akshayam, the entertainment quotient will be high with the hugely awaited performance of The Local Train, and indie-rock band who have garnered great accolades after their performance in the premier musical show, Coke Studio. Also, popular stand-up comedian and one half of the comic duo of Kanan Gill and Biswa, Biswa Kalyan Rath will be present to take the students on a mammoth laugh riot with his humorous observations, deadly puns and oratory skills.

The event has confirmed participation from some of the best management schools in the country such as FMS, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi amongst others. The 72 hours of non-stop activity spread across November 4th, 5th and 6th will definitely be an event to be emulated, and exceeded year after year.
