Delphique 2019, the 23rd National Management Convention of MDI Gurgaon, was held at the institute’s campus on November 9 and 10, 2019.
As always, the two-day event proved to be a knowledge partnership process that set the stage for industry-student interactions and vibrant panel discussions by experts. The event got under way with Dr. Pawan K Singh, Director-MDI and Prof. Jyostna Bhatnagar, Dean GP the lighting of the lamp. Yan Han, Chairperson, TopSocial India, who was the guest of honour and R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, who was the chief guest spoke on the occasion.
The panel discussion that followed focused on ‘Startups as a career choice for students’. The panellists stressed the need for startup entrepreneurs to have the right mindset--the readiness to take risks and accept failures--and also the need for introspection and knowing one’s strengths before taking the plunge. A business degree, most of them felt, definitely promises wide exposure, broadens one’s horizons, develop soft skills, and gain a new perspective with respect to problem-solving. Work experience, most of them opined, would help one navigate the startup world with better ease. What emerged as imperatives for staying ahead of the curve were: conviction, vision, clairvoyance, sharp focus; thrust on learning, unlearning, and evolving; and staying close to customer needs.
The panellists included MunishDayal, Senior Partner, Baring Capital; Udit Joshi, Integrated Marketing Specialist, Topline Consulting; Varun Miglani, Startup Consultant and Growth Developer; Varija Bajaj, Founder, VARIJA Lifestyles; Akshat Saxena, Co-founder, ePay Later; and Ankit Doshi, Founder InsideIIM. Author Nistha Tripathi was the moderator.
The knowledge panels that followed saw many companies providing live projects on current industry issues. Panel discussions were led by Sqrrl Fintech and HappCoach. SqrrlFintech’s marketing panel was attended by Aditya Sahay, Head of Engineering, Sqrrl Fintech and Vanshika Mehta, Brand Storyteller, Sqrrl Fintech; the strategy panel of HappCoach had Sorbojeet Chatterjee, Co-founder and CEO, HappCoach as panellists.
On Day 2, there were panel discussions led by companies such as RB, ICRA, Magicbricks, 32Checks and AmbitionBox by Naukri, in the domains of Human Resource, Finance, Strategy and Marketing. Among the panellists were Priyanka Agrawal, Regional Talent Manager, RB Hygiene and Home; Manek Narang, Corporate Credit Ratings, CARE Ratings Ltd.; JitinMakkar, Vice President and Head – Credit Policy, ICRA; Surabhi Arora, Head of Research, Magicbricks; Deepak Agarwal, Senior Product Manager, Magicbricks; Vijay Sehgal, Co-Founder, 32Checks; and Damini Kapoor, Product Manager, AmbitionBox.
Teams from institutes including IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Ranchi, IIM Kashipur, XIMB, VIT, and MDI, and also various startup founders participated in the B-plan competition. Railway crack detector, water purifier for conserving water, and B2B conventional service provider were some of the innovative ideas that were put forth during the event. The first prize was bagged by ‘Meraki Management’, a three-month-old startup company for artist management. Their team comprised its two founders, one of whom manages the startup and the other studies at ISB. The IIM Ranchi team came second for their idea of an app for dog lovers.
This debate competition saw the active participation of teams from various colleges in the form of online audio/video submissions for the preliminary round. Based on the performance of the two-member teams in their submissions, six teams were chosen for the semi-finals, which were a closed room debate with one member of each team going for, and one going against the motion ‘Moody’s negative credit rating for India is justified’. Four teams--3 from MDI and 1 team from FMS Delhi--finally made it to the finals. The format of the debate was the same for the topic ‘Growing protectionism is the way of the future’ too; it involved a lively round of Q&A of each participant with the judges. The wining team was from MDI.
‘Building Strong and Enduring Brands’ was the theme for the valedictory panel discussion, wherein the spotlight was on building robust brands, making the brand available by leveraging technology, and ensuring sustainability.

Ltd.; Vani Gupta Dandia, Independent Business Consultant at CherryPeachPlum Growth Partners, Ex-Marketing Director at PepsiCo; RaghavendranMadhavrao, Vice President - B2B Lubricants, Shell India Markets Pvt. Ltd.; and Bani Saluja, Vice President and Head - Marketing and Travel & Lifestyle Services, American Express. It was moderated by Professor Manoj Kumar Srivastava of MDI Gurgaon.
