On June 18, 2026, the Centre for Ethics, ESG Initiatives & Responsible Organisations (CERO) at MDI Gurgaon hosted an enriching research seminar, "The Governance of Corporate Sustainability: Research Insights and Future Trajectories." brilliantly delivered by Prof. Tanusree Jain, Professor of Corporate Sustainability at Copenhagen Business School (Department of Management, Society and Communication & Centre for Sustainability).
CERO Co-Chairpersons Prof. Madhushree Nanda Agarwal and Prof. Sunil Ashra warmly opened the event, welcoming Prof. Jain and an enthusiastic, diverse audience. The seminar brought together CERO members, MDI faculty, FPM scholars, TRAs, and researchers from JIMS, UPES, and O. P. Jindal Global University.
Prof. Jain captivated attendees with a deep dive into the evolving landscape of corporate sustainability governance—exploring external/internal frameworks, formal regulations, informal mechanisms, and ESG's growing role in business decisions. A particularly engaging segment examined board structure and diversity within the Indian context. She insightfully addressed the challenge of tokenism, outlining four archetypes that women board members often experience: Marginalized, Paralyzed, Queen Bee, and Change Maker—sparking meaningful reflection among the audience.
The conversation further spanned corporate political engagement, international governance, platform organizations, and the evolution of firm performance—from narrow financial metrics to a broader view embracing non-financial outcomes, responsibility, and ESG practices. Prof. Jain also revisited Agency Theory (Fama & Jensen, 1983), highlighting the crucial manager-shareholder dynamic and the need for robust accountability mechanisms. A standout takeaway was her discussion on ESG decoupling—the troubling gap between public ESG commitments and actual implementation, and doing it without committing.
The session powerfully underscored the urgent need for inclusive, mindful leadership in today's business environment. It concluded with a vote of thanks, a memento presented to Prof. Jain in appreciation, and a cheerful group photograph—beautifully capturing the collaborative spirit.
