Abstract

Purpose
Blockchain Technology (BT) is gaining an increased importance due to its potential to address several issues in a supply chain. This study examines the mechanism through which BT can help firms to improve quality performance. Specifically, the study analyzes the role of supply chain quality management (SCQ) capabilities in the relationship between BT implementation and quality performance.

Design/methodology/approach
A theoretical model grounded in organizational information processing theory (OIPT) is proposed and tested by Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using data from 117 manufacturing firms in the UK.

Findings
BT helps to develop quality information exchange capability (QINF), and quality cooperation and integration capability (QINT). QINF and QINT help to develop supply chain responsiveness capability (QRES), which improves quality performance.

Originality/value
The study contributes to literature by examining the SCQ capabilities enabled by BT and how these capabilities improve quality performance. The results will help managers to understand the capabilities enabled by BT, which can improve quality performance.
